Originalmente de paja, esta iglesia fue terminada en su figura actual alrededor del año 1537 en la ciudad de Santo Domingo, La Española. De modestas proporciones, exhibiendo detalles barrocos en un estilo gotico tardio, consta de una nave y ocho capillas de diferentes epocas. La fachada está compuesta por dos torres disimiles de piedra y tres arcos de ladrillo. El prebisterio data del siglo XVIII.Seriamente dañada por un terremoto en el año 157, se reinicia su recontruccion en 1574. Fue incendiada por el pirata Drake en 1586 y en el año 1591 un huracan la destruye casi totalmente.
Juan Pablo Duarte, el Padre de la Patria, fue bautizado en dicha iglesia en donde se conserva la pila bautismal.
Originally a Hut, this church was finished in its actual shape around 1537 in Santo Domingo, La Hispaniola. It is a modest church with baroque details and last gothic style, has a nave and eight capels from different ages. The front is composed by two dissimilars stoned towers and three bricked arches.The prebisterio come from s.XVIII.Seriously damaged by a earthquake by 1571, begin to be reconstructed around 1574. Then, in the year 1586 was burned by Drake The Pirate and a hurricane destroyed it almost totally by 1591.
Juan Pablo Duarte, the Father of Our Nation, was baptized in this church, where is preservated the baptismal basin.
